After the surgery the patients are prone to constipation for many reasons:
Pain Medication – It is the primary reason of constipation after lap band surgery. People who have problems of pain after surgery generally take the pain relief pills or drugs. These painkillers work well to reduce the pain but on the other hand give you constipation problem. If You are taking pain medication for a long time then it may lead you towards constipation.
Food & Drink After Surgery – After surgery the doctor restrict people about the food that they don’t have to eat or drink but sometimes people ignore it and take this kind of food that results constipation.
Inactivity – Getting up and walking or being active is one of the triggers for the bowel movement. Suddenly going to the bed rest will help trigger constipation. This can effect in slippage of bands which become a negative effect.
Anesthesia – Patients think that anesthesia can puts us to sleep but it is a fact that t paralyzes the muscles, and so your intestinal muscles were also paralyzes just like your arms and legs. Due to this the muscle that pushes the food in the intestinal tract does not work till your intestine does not wake up.
Prevention from Constipation after Lap Band Surgery:-
The patients who went through surgery(s) have higher chances to have the constipation than average person. If you are having constipation after lap band surgery then you should consult your lap band doctor. They generally suggest you to take some stool softener. Since prevention is the key after surgery so you must take all the preventions.
Medications – Take the doctor’s prescribed stool softener or an enema. Take the mild stool softener that is prescribed by your Doctor. Don’t use over the counter treatments without taking the suggestion from your doctor.
Drink More Fluid/Liquid – Start taking more liquid food and avoiding caffeinated beverages and take water and juice so that your abdomen feel hydrated that makes constipation risk lower.
Eat More Fiber Based food – You should add some fiber based food in your diet after the surgery. Fresh Fruit and vegetables will help decreasing the constipation and reduces the chances of constipation if its symptoms are occurring. Take high fiber food that include lean protein since it is necessary for speedy recovery. Taking 6-8 glass of water a day will be fine after surgery.
If all these do not help you then you should again report to your lap bans surgeon and according to their suggestions follow the instructions.
