The Lap Band Surgery is known as the least invasive bariatric surgery available that has few complications, less pain, less scarring and quicker recovery than any other form of obesity surgery. One of the side effects/complications that can be seen in some patients after lap band surgery is diarrhea. Diarrhea is a condition of having frequent loose or liquid bowel movements. If it becomes serious then it will be a valid cause of death. Many developing countries have this second most common cause of the death of infants. Due to the loss of water, the body looses fluid that causes dehydration. It is the root of the problem as it becomes the cause of death of diarrhea sufferers.

The possible causes of diarrhea are due to viral infection, parasites or bacterial toxins. If having regular liquid bowel movements after lap band surgery then it is serious as your body is loosing water at a fast pace and you must do something before its too late. The first treatment that patients should start from is to consume sufficient amount of water so that the water loss recovers. Use the Electrolytes that are rich with salts and some nutrients. If the diarrhea is at its earlier stage then these are sufficient to stop diarrhea but sometimes you should required to meet your doctor. Stoma Obstruction can also arise as a problem.

Conditions when you need to meet your doctor if having diarrhea after lap band surgery are:

  • Moderate or severe diarrhea
  • If the bowel movements contains blood in it.
  • If Diarrhea continues for more than two days.
  • If you are suffering from non-cramping abdominal pain, fever, unstable weight loss.
  • If you had take some food that contains parasites.
  • If your abdomen is unable to digest the food and push the food without digesting then also the diarrhea occurs.

It generally occurs at the first two weeks because at this time the patient is on the clear liquid and so body did not have to do much exercise for food digestion. When you flip from liquid to solid food, you can have this problem. The Lap Band Patients should instruct to avoid refined sugar which can cause dumping, some bad experience, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
