What to do if suffering from Esophageal Dilation Issue?
Throughout the world the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding or Lap Band is the best choice for the treatment of morbid obesity. But it is also true that the surgery is not totally free from side effects. Esophageal Dilation is one of the known side effects of Lap Band. There are other long term issues too like the band slippage and gastric erosion but the esophageal dilation is still more careful evaluation.
Esophageal Dilation occurs when the esophagus enlarges over time and is related to too tight band or improper placement of the band near the junction of esophagus and stomach. Feeling of constipation also arise, so check it to your doctor.
Symptoms of Esophageal Dilation:-
With the esophageal dilation there is some reflux of saliva predominantly in the horizontal position. Food intake is mildly impaired or not at all and vomiting may occur. Weight loss can be slow down. In this situation the patient need to go for the GI X-Ray for better diagnose i.e. gastric pouch dilatation with or without band slippage and digestive intolerance without radiological anomaly.
Causes of Esophageal Dilation
- The kind of band, a distinction being made some times between the low pressure and high pressure bands.
- The technical procedure is supposed to be standardized and a consensus has been established on not placing the band above the gastro esophageal junction. It was found that the pars flaccida approach has made it possible to decrease the number of pouch dilatations and/or slippages but this does not seem to be very effective with the esophageal dilation.
- If the band is prolonged and excessively tighten then can be the cause of Esophageal Dilation.
- If you have been over eating with the excess food which is going to overflow from the pouch then it also make esophageal dilation.
